Exposure to children? Yes
What ages were the children? l7 ,12, 5, 4, and 2 years old
Describe the dog’s reaction to children: Rufus is not around children all the time, just when the neighbors’ kids come over. He gets over excited with them and barks loud and runs around. I think a house with children over l6 would be better.
Good with other dogs? Yes
Comments about behavior with other dogs: Rufus doesn’t mind other dogs. We have four other bassets; two of them are senior dogs, 12 and 13. They get short with him since he has a lot of energy, too much for their taste. But we have two other bassets that are 9 and 10 that do really well with him. The one likes to play and chase him as long as he doesn’t get too loud or excited.
Good with cats? Unknown
Good with birds, parrots, etc. Yes
Comments about behavior with birds: We have a pair of finches and a guinea pig. He doesn’t seem to bother them. He does bark at the guinea pig when we give it treats as Rufus wants the carrots.
Good with other pets Yes
List type of pets, and comments about behavior with other pets We have turkeys and chickens that are fenced. Rufus is curious about them but doesn’t seem to want to chase or bark at them.
Can climb stairs? Yes
Comments about stairs: Rufus can do stairs very well; runs up them like nothing.
Pulls on a leash? Yes
Comments about pulling on a leash: Sometimes he can pull on a leash when he wants to go his way. But for the most part he walks very well.
Food aggressive? Yes
Comments about food aggressiveness: Rufus has a little food aggression when it come to chewy bones. He will bark at the other dogs if he has them or if they do get them he will try to get a bone from them.
Has allergies? Yes
List allergies and any related comments: He does have some mild skin allergies it seems.
Type of family life? Active
Comments about family life: Rufus likes people around at all times. He loves to go for walks and play. List anything the dog is afraid of (please complete, in full) Rufus is gun shy and doesn’t seem to like loud noises.
Tell us about your foster basset: Rufus has issues with being left alone. He gets anxious and will pee all over the house. It was really bad when we first got him. He does do better now but still has trouble. Rufus is crate trained which helps somewhat but will pee in the crate. He is a very well mannered dog otherwise. Rufus loves to play and take walks.
