Weight: 94 lbs
Being fostered in: Minnesota

Exposure to children?

Yes

What ages were the children?

toddler and older

Describe the dog’s reaction: likes them, nervous around them, etc

Drake is very comfortable around kids of all ages. He does not jump up on them. Sits and lets them pet him. Loves interacting with kids! Lights up and wags his tail when he sees kids!

Good with other dogs?

Yes

Comments about behavior with other dogs

He is very respectful of the existing pack order when introduced into our home with 4 other dogs. Although he will play a bit with the others he prefers to lie near them and maybe cuddle if they are tolerant of it! We’ve never seen any signs of fear, apprehension or aggression when with other dogs known or unfamiliar to him.

Good with cats?

Yes

Comments about behavior with cats

He sniffs them and walks away.

Good with birds, parrots, etc.

Unknown

Good with other pets

No

List type of pets, and comments about behavior with other pets

When he was introduced to the chinchilla he didn’t act like he was going to gobble him up but was VERY animated! I’d say small furry critters might be best kept away from his hound nose and instincts.

Can climb stairs?

Yes

Comments about stairs

Even though we have a ramp he prefers the stairs. He is losing weight so it is easier for him to get up them.

Pulls on a leash?

No

Comments about pulling on a leash

He prefers a quick walk so if one is walking too slowly he will pull to get moving. Once he is at a good pace he walks very nicely on leash.

Food aggressive?

No

Comments about food aggressiveness

Eats with the other 4 dogs surrounding him with no issues. He WILL try to finish off the other dog’s food if he finishes first but responds immediately to a verbal command of “No!” Never aggressive…just likes to share!

Has allergies?

No

List allergies and any related comments

Although – his blood work did indicate a possible allergy….we have seen no signs or symptoms of this!

Type of family life?

Doesn’t care

Comments about family life

Would prefer a family who likes to take walks! Quiet down time is okay with him, too!

List anything the dog is afraid of

So far he isn’t afraid of thunder, fire works or gun fire. The vacuum is just an annoyance since he typically is lying where we need to clean.

Tell us about your foster basset

Drake is a very loving dog. Even at his age he is pretty active and enjoys taking long walks. He loves going to the dog park where he spends the time walking the perimeter sniffing everything he can. He is not a big barker but will if he is very excited. When he barks he bounces up and down with ears waving. He is over weight – down to 85 pounds. Needs someone who is dedicated to helping him get down to a good weight and maintaining it. He loves carrots for treats and prefers them over a biscuit! He has a fold out child couch (Sesame Street) that he sleeps on at night. At bedtime he lays down on it and needs to be covered with his blanket before settling down. He is house trained and we have not had one accident!
