Male
Age: 6 years
Weight: 40 lbs.
Basset/Daschund mix
Being fostered in Minnesota
Exposure to children? Yes
What ages were the children? 4 and older
Describe the dog’s reaction to children: Reuben does ok with older children, he likes to say hello, but does not have a lot of interest in playing with them.
Good with other dogs? Yes
Comments about behavior with other dogs: He tolerates other dogs but again has no real interest in playing with them. He will join a game of Basset 500 now and then but that’s the extent of it.
Good with cats? Unknown
Good with birds, parrots, etc: Unknown
Good with other pets: Unknown
Can climb stairs? Yes
Comments about stairs: Reuben has no problems with stairs.
Pulls on a leash? Yes
Comments about pulling on a leash: I had trouble walking him with a neck collar so I started using a harness instead. This has helped tremendously. Walking is Reuben’s number one favorite thing to do – and I’m pretty sure he would rather walk than eat.
Food aggressive? No
Comments about food aggressiveness: I did have one incident the first day with the food, but nothing since then. Reuben will usually let you know he’s hungry by pushing his empty food dish your way.
Has allergies? No
Type of family life? Quiet
Comments about family life: Reuben has a tendency to be a bit timid and does not like loud noises. He does well with his foster siblings but would much prefer a nice quiet house with lots of walks and napping going on. He is what I would call a “low maintenance” dog meaning he is content to sit quietly by your side, will let you know when he needs to go out, or is hungry, and does not require a lot of attention. As long as he has his walks he’s just as happy as can be!
List anything the dog is afraid of: Thunder, Helicopters, Vacuum Cleaners – He will bark at anything that makes a loud noise, though he is working on this and learning to take these noisy kinds of things in stride. He even managed to make friends with the vacuum yesterday by touching it with his nose!
Tell us about your foster basset: Isn’t he a handsome guy! There are not enough words in the English language to tell you what a great little guy Reuben is! Reuben is a Basset/Dachshund mix who had trouble adjusting to the new baby in the house. It was with great sadness and many tears that his family decided they would need to find him a new forever home. Reuben is a well mannered, well trained dog who is comfortable living in a smaller home. He is more content to be indoors than out, and does well with daily walks for his potty breaks so he does not need a large yard. He is fully house trained, and will scratch at the door when he needs to go out. Reuben has lived as an only dog for most of his life, but is adjusting well to his foster siblings. He shares well with the other dogs, and is more submissive in manner when dealing with them. I have found him to be a bit timid and not always sure what to do in new situations so he does need a home where he can feel safe and secure and given clear commands so he understands what is expected of him. He loves to snuggle up with his humans and sneak in a “smooch” as often as he can, so willingness to cuddle is a prerequisite with this adorable little guy! Reuben does fine with children ages 5 and older, but I would not recommend him for a home with younger children at this time. He is more laid back in personality and prefers to snuggle over playing fetch. He would do well by himself or as a companion for another pet. All he asks for is someone he can love and adore (and smooch now and then).
